Slave Voices in North Carolina

Wayne County Public Library is proud to present “Slave Voices in North Carolina,” a Road Scholar program made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, on Saturday, February 6th, at 1:00 PM.

Dr. Lucinda MacKethan, Emerita Professor of English at NC State University, will present personal narratives, letters, poetry and interviews of North Carolina slaves and discuss how these works fill in a lost or often distorted picture of slavery in our state before the Civil War.  The audience will be given a realistic picture of how North Carolina slaves lived, worked, created families, worshipped, and—sometimes—escaped from bondage.

Dr. MacKethan has taught college courses in American, Southern, and African-American literature and culture, and is a well-respected, award-winning academic scholar with numerous author and editor credentials.  She is currently at work on a book-length work on the intertwined lives of slaves and masters in the Old South.
